There has been an outcry about students’ poor achievement in mathematics which could be traced to improper evaluation of students using both valid and reliable instruments arranged in a feasible and realistic manner. None adherence to standard item-writing guidelines may render examination questions easier or more difficult than intended. It is line with this, that this study therefore examined the effective use of standard scores in item analysis in tests construction of mathematics achievement among adolescents in Education District II in Lagos State. Four hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance to guide the study.. The target population for this study comprised the Senior Secondary Two (S.S II) students and teachers from public schools in Education District II of Lagos State. The descriptive survey research design was used in the study. Stratified sampling technique was used to select 180 respondents comprising 120 senior secondary school one students and 60 teachers. Two instruments were used to collect data. The first was a researcher constructed questionnaire titled Teachers’ Questionnaire on Effective Use of Standard Scores in Item Analysis on Tests Construction (TQEUSSIATC), while the second instrument was Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT. Findings from the study revealed that there is a significant impact of standard score in item analysis on students’ achievement in Mathematics; there is a significant relationship between teachers’ qualification and their attitude to item analysis; there is a significant relationship between teachers’ attitude to item analysis and students’ achievement in Mathematics; and there is a significant relationship between teachers’ experience and their attitude to item analysis Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the effective use standard score in item analysis should be maintained in test development and evaluation, because of its importance in producing suitable standardized tests items and in minimizing measurement errors.en_US
