dc.description.abstract | The study examined predictors of drug and alcohol abuse among adolescents in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State. Descriptive research design was adopted in the study. The study sample consisted of two hundred and fifty SS II students drawn from five selected senior secondary schools in the study area, by stratified random sampling technique. A self-designed questionnaire titled “Predictors of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Questionnaire (PDABQ)” was used to collect data from the respondents. The instrument has a reliability coefficient of 0.70 when tested during the pilot study. Chi-square (χ2) and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical tools were used to test the three hypotheses that guided the study at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that parental influence and peer influence are significant predictors of drug and alcohol abuse among students. Also, there is a significant difference due to age on drug and alcohol abuse among students. Based on these findings, the study recommends that the government (federal, state and local) must set up drug awareness units is schools. There should be public enlightenment campaigns on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Also, parents should serve as role models to their children and painstakingly advise and warn them about the effects of drug abuse and the consequences of associating with those engaged in drug abuse. | en_US |
