Abstract
The 2019 Convocation Ceremony of the University of Lagos marked a significant academic and institutional milestone, celebrating the graduation of 12,843 students. This total includes 7,438 first degree recipients (57.9%) and 5,405 postgraduate degree awardees (42.1%), reflecting the university’s growing contribution to Nigeria’s intellectual and professional workforce. The ceremonies commenced with the Convocation Lecture titled "Nigeria Rising: The Path to Prosperity", delivered by the Vice President of Nigeria, His Excellency Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON—an alumnus of the university. The lecture was widely acknowledged as a profound and timely discourse on national development.
The three-day event featured the conferment of degrees across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, culminating in the award of postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees, and 150 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. The 2017/2018 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award was presented to Ajibade Oluwaseyi Ayodele of the Faculty of Engineering for his research on composite materials for automotive brake systems. Additionally, the university conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees on distinguished Nigerians, including Mr. Jim Ovia, Alhaji Lateef Olufemi Okunnu, and Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, and elevated Professor Sulaiman Adeniyi Adekola to the status of Emeritus Professor.
Beyond academic recognition, the university reported significant progress in research, innovation, teaching, and community service. Under the current administration, strategic efforts have been made to strengthen academic standards, enhance global partnerships, implement innovative funding models, and entrench accountability in university governance. The institution reaffirmed its vision of becoming a world-class citadel of learning committed to transformational leadership and inclusive national development.
This convocation affirms the University of Lagos’s legacy of excellence and its commitment to shaping the future through education, innovation, and leadership.
