Abstract
The traditional extended family system in Nigeria has been broken up in recent times. It remains debatable whether institutional care promotes the rights of older people. Ageing-in-place is usually viewed as a positive approach supporting them to live independently but in some cases may diminish their quality of life. This study sought to describe the elderly in institutional care and explore reasons for placement. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study of the elderly infour registered care homes in Lagos and Oyo States. It included 120 respondents aged 60 years and above in institutional care. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 17.0 was used for data analysis. The frequencies were presented in the form of tables and charts. The mean age of respondents was 78.78.8 years. More than half (58.8%) were females and 64.2% were widowed and over a quarter (26.7 %) had no living children. The main facilitator to institutional care was the children (43.2%) followed by religious organizations (26.7%) and social workers (15.0%). The median stay was 12 months (IQR 4-48 months).The main reason for institutionalization was loneliness in 41.7% of respondents followed by destitution (31.7%), insecurity(13.3%),illness(9.2%)andill-treatment(4.1%).Understanding the facilitators and reasons for placement of the elderly into care homes in a developing country such as Nigeria is important to policy makers to the need or otherwise for institutional care homes
