Abstract
This study investigated the effects of problem solving and mastery learning strategies on junior secondary school students' attitudes toward mathematics. The moderating effect of gender was also examined on the dependent measure within a blueprint of pre-test, posttest non-randomized control group quasi-experimental design. Mastery Learning and Problem-Solving were used as experimental approaches while a control group was exposed to the traditional teaching method. The participants consisted of 225 male and 225 female students drawn from three junior secondary schools in Education District V of Lagos State through Stratified Random Sampling Procedure. Their ages ranged from 10 to 13 years with a Mean age of 11.80. The relevant data were generated using a Mathematics Attitude Scale (MAS) by Obe (2002). The instrument has a reliability coefficient of 0.80. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of Significance. The results shows that; the Problem Solving Approach (PSA) proved to be effective in improving students' attitudes (affective) towards mathematic. There was a significant effect of gender on students' attitude towards mathematics. There was a significant interaction effect of treatment and gender on students' attitudes towards mathematics. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that teachers should gear up effort towards influencing students to develop interest and positive attitude to the subject especially in this era of new technological development using good instructional materials, self initiatives and improvisation that enhance the understanding of the subject. Also the need for diagnostic and remedial lessons after every topic taught was recommended
