This study investigated the influence of social networking sites (SNSs) usage and time spent on academic achievement of Physics students in tertiary institutions in Lagos State. The study is an ex-post facto of descriptive research design. The sample size consisted of 200 respondents in tertiary institutions randomly selected from 5 tertiary institutions in Lagos State. A validated structured questionnaire on networking site usage and time spent in the usage and Physics Achievement Test (PAT) were the two instruments used in collecting data. The reliability coefficient of the PAT and questionnaire were calculated to be 0.72 and 0.763 using the split half and Cronbach –Alpha respectively. The data collected were analyzed using frequencies, percentages and the pair sampled t-tests. The result shows that students spent an average of 2-4 hours daily on the social networking sites and they were connected to numerous social networking sites, however Facebook was found to be the most popular site subscribed to. Also, social networking sites had a significant effect on students’ academic achievement in physics. The study recommends that social networking sites be used as channels of educational interaction in tertiary institutions as against the use of obsolete means of information transfer as paper mail or e-mails in order to get today’s digital natives. A more accessible internet and stable power supply will encourage the use of the network sites, which can be incorporated into education to enhance academic excellence.en_US
