dc.description.abstract | This research examines municipal waste management in Agboyi Ketu LCDA of Lagos State. The study was propelled in view of the inadequate municipal solid waste management in the area. The major objective of the study is to find out the amount of waste generated daily in the area. In addition, it is also concerned with identifying the types of waste mostly generated in the area, the methods of municipal solid waste management practiced in the area and also to identify the environmental problems resulting from the methods practiced in the area. 20 streets were randomly selected from the study area, 103 households were randomly picked from houses that were selected from each of the 20 street using systematic sampling method. Structured questionnaire was administered in each of the one hundred and three (103) selected houses. Also measurement of daily generated waste was taken in each of the houses. The study was carried out using primary and secondary methods of gathering data. Findings from the study reveal that about 2.5kg of waste is generated per street in the study area. The major component of resident’s waste is food remains and paper. The predominant method of waste management used in the area is government services i.e. the LAWMA trucks and most of the residents do not experience environmental problems from using this method. The study concluded that in order to upgrade municipal waste management in the study area some measure should be put in place, these include; the adoption of the 4Rs of resource management and these are: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Restoration of damaged resources of Environment, so that waste can be turned to wealth, and also there should be awareness programmes organized by government to educate people on proper waste management. | en_US |
