dc.description.abstractThe study examines the influence of work status and family relationships on self-esteem of educated stay-at-home mothers in Lagos State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The sample consists of educated mothers comprising 75 working mothers and 75 stay-at-home mothers drawn from Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) meetings of two selected private nursery and primary schools in Ikeja, Ibeju-Lekki and Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Areas of Lagos State. Two research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Also, three major instruments were used to generate data for the study, namely, Personal Data Questionnaire (PDQ), Index of Self-esteem (ISE) and Index of Family Relations (IFR). Data generated were analyzed using descriptive, protected t-lest comparison and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results from the analysis of data indicate that the two null hypotheses tested were rejected. The study has shown that there is a significant influence family relationships on self-esteem of educated stay-at-home mothers. It has also shown that educated working mothers significantly exhibit higher self-esteem than their non-working counterparts. These findings are situated within the existing body of knowledge and their implications for counselling education are discussed.en_US
