Abstract
Physical activity enhances health in numerous ways. According to Bouchad etal (1990) physical fitness is strongly related to physical activity. Growing amount of data suggests that there are also association between physical fitness and health. Hence, this study was designed to determine whether there will be any significant differences in the physical, health and performance fitness status of college of education, Lagos, were used for comparative purposes.The American Alliance for health, Physical Education and Reaction (AAPHERD) proposed fitness test was used in the assessment of the subjects. Descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation and range, as well as inferential statistics of “T” - test were employed in the analysis of data.Results obtained indicated significant differences in Heart- rate, Health-Related and performance related variables, all in favor of physical and health Education students except in agility test where there was no significant difference. The need for students to be actively involved in regular exercise and the implications of active living were highlighted. It was recommended that formation and approval of physical fitness club as well as introduction to recreation which shall be made compulsory be encouraged in higher institutions of learning. This might enhance physical fitness status of college students and consequently prevent risks of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, poor body posture and back pain.
