Abstract
The paper investigated the three leadership styles (autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire) used by the principals’ during administration in the state and private schools and their influences on secondary school teachers’ attitudes towards the teaching of chemistry in the South-East, Nigeria. The problem of indiscipline found in both public and private schools, unfavorable relationship among principals and teachers as well as non-involvement of teachers in the formulation of school policies were blamed on principals’ leadership styles resulting to teachers’ poor attitude to teaching. Two null hypotheses guided the study. It made use of survey and correlational research designs whereby the influence of each of these leadership styles and school types were rated by 250 chemistry teachers’ using Leadership Styles Scales (LSS) and Teachers’ Attitudes Scale (TAS) instruments. Data collected were analyzed using independent t-test and regression analysis. Results showed that autocratic leadership style and public schools had the highest influence on secondary school teachers’ attitudes towards the teaching of chemistry. The paper recommended flexible leadership styles in boosting teachers’ attitude for improved learning outcomes in chemistry among the students’.
