The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived psychological impact of parental involvement on performance of collegiate athletes in Lagos State. The survey research method was used for this study. The sample size for the study included four hundred (n-400) collegiate athletes from University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Yaba College of Technology and Lagos State Polytechnic respectfully. They were selected through the simple random sampling technique. A self-developed validated questionnaire named “Parental Involvement on Sports Performance Questionnaire (PISPQ)” was used for this study. This instrument consisted of two sections. Section A obtained information on the demographic data of the respondents while the other section obtained information based on the stated hypotheses on a four point likert scale of Agreed and Disagreed, respectively. In ensuring that the instrument measures what it is supposed to measure, it was presented to the supervisor and an expert in the area of Sports and Exercise Psychology for content and construct validity. The reliability was ascertained after conducting a pilot study for two weeks. Results from the reliability test indicated a Pearson Correlation Coefficient value of 0.83 which implies that the instrument is reliable and hence it was adopted for data collection. The researcher administered the copies of the questionnaire through the assistance of two trained research assistants. The approval to administer the questionnaire was sought through the help of the director of sports and coaches who helped in talking to the athletes to gain their cooperation. The researcher ensured that the questionnaire was carefully administered and retrieved on the spot. The data collected from the questionnaire was collated and coded for analysis. The descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentages and bar chart was used to analyse the demographic information of the respondents while the inferential statistics of chi-square was used to test all hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level.en_US
