Abstract
This study was undertaken to find out the effects of mental practice strategieson performance of early adolescents in four basketball shooting skills. A total of twenty (20) novice male participants mainly secondary school (JSS 1) students of International School, UNILAG participated in the study and were drawn through a simple random sampling technique. The mean age of the students stood at 12.5 years. A consent form was signed by both parents and participants. The participants were randomly divided into four groups- two experimental groups of mental practice and two control groups of / 1, phys ical practice. A pretest was conducted for all the four groups before they I " • were taken through a six week training in mental practice and physical skills practice. The mental practice strategies used were concentration and directional attention practice while the control groups were taught only the physical practice oj the four skills - set shot, jump shot, overhead shot and lay up shot. The instrument was validated by experts in psychological testing. The reliability coefficients of the pretests was (7981) using alpha crombach reliability. Descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation and the inferential statistics of t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to test the four (4) hypotheses postulated The alpha level was put at 0.05. In the t-test inferential statistics, the results of the experimental groups 1 & 2 in set shot, lay up shot and jump shot showed no significant differences but was significant in the overhead shot. Also using the ANOVA, the participants in the experimental groups did not show significant difference in their skills in their groups. They all progressed at the same pace far better than the control group participants.
