dc.description.abstract | Collection development at the University of Lagos has been a cooperative effort between librarians and the teaching faculty since the inception of the institution in 1962. In the 1970s and early 1980s, acquisition of books and journals enjoyed a boom because the country benefited from the oil boom through which it earned substantial foreign exchange and also had a strong national currency then. But problems emerged in the late 1980s and continued till now. This paper discusses library acquisition during the boom and lean years. Some comparison is made of the acquisition in these years and the problems which the library faces, while the impact of gifts and exchange programmes on library acquisition is highlighted. Continuous problems with regard to funding pose a threat to quality education. Some suggestions on funding are proffered. | en_US |
