dc.description.abstract | The rejoinder, to which this reply is addressed. though. attempts to fault the analysis and arguments advanced in Ajibove ( 2008a). namely. that the mid-toned syllable ( henceforth MTS) found between two juxtaposed nouns: the possessum (possessed) and the possessor in genitive constructions i n Yoruba is a genitive markers i t unfortunately does not fair better in its attempt to explain (a) why the so-called ( prosthetic vowel is sensitive to a particular context i.e. in genitive constructions only; and in most cases with a lot of speakers only with consonant initial possessors and not elsewhere: (b) its syntactic function. (c) its semantic content and. (d) the interaction of phonology with syntax in the language. This present paper sheds new light on the status of the MTS (an element that has been shrouded in controversy for many years) and further reaffirms the earlier position that the MTS is a genitive marker whose pronunciation is phonologically conditioned. lt demonstrates further that it has a syntactic function as the head of a genitive construction, which projects its own phrase and shows that it is a relational morpheme which indicates that the two juxtaposed entities are in some kind of genitive relation: and in the specific case under review. namely. a possessive phrase. It thus goes beyond the diachronic approach in Awobuluyi’s account and relies on empirical (language internal) and cross- linguistic evidence on the one hand and theoretical support on the other. | en_US |
