Learner- Teacher Relationships: Implications for Reproductive Health Education for Adolescents in Secondary Schools in Lagos State

Abstract
The development of appropriate life-long learning skills, literacy level, moral and civic values and positive interpersonal relationships as important factors in a social environment. This study investigated Learner-Teacher relationships as they exist within Secondary schools and its implications on reproductive health education of adolescents in Lagos State. Expost Facto Research design was employed. 150 participants (50 Teachers and 100 students of from JSS 3 to SS 2 for students aged 13- 19years) using the same instrument for multi-stage target selected through a combination of simple random and cluster sampling techniques constituted the study sample. Research instrument was modified structured Life Changes Impact Assessment interview Questionnaire of American Psychological Association (Sarason, etal, 1978) tagged (LCAQ) adopted for multi-stage farget group discussions. The t- Test statistics was applied for data analysis. Results: Identified reproductive health related complications such as: sexual abuse, molestation, assault and corporal punishment for refusal to comply to negative relationships and teenage pregnancy. Also, student-student relationships resulted in teenage pregnancies while cases of post abortion complications occurred. Other resultant issues include: expulsion and discontinuation of education and emotional dejection. There are Teacher-Teacher relationships and domestication of students prior to sexual abuse. Recommendation: Revisit Education curriculum on Sexuality Education to inculcate Refusal Skills for girls. Teachers monitor for disciplinary measures.
