| dc.description.abstract | Parents play important roles in the growth and development of their children. The absence of a parent usually creates a special family situation which could have significant effect on a child’s adjustment particularly if the home has been disrupted by death, divorce, separation or abandonment. Some children raised in single-parent homes have high risk of experiencing psycho-social problems such as depression, anxiety, aggression and low self-esteem. Thus, this study sought to determine how Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Social Skills Training will help children from single-parent homes in Ibadan to overcome such problems. The research was hinged on Psycho-social Development theory and Social Learning theory. Quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised all Junior Secondary two (JS11) students in Ibadan. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample size of 106 Junior Secondary two students comprising of fifty (50) male and fifty six (56) female students. The instruments used to obtain relevant data for the study were Psycho-social Problems of Children from Single-parent Homes Questionnaire (PPCSPHQ), Goldberg Depression Inventory (GDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Eight research questions and corresponding hypotheses were raised to guide the study. The pre-test and post-test scores were analysed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. Four research hypotheses were rejected while four hypotheses were accepted. The study revealed that Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Social Skills Training significantly reduced depression among children from single-parent homes. Anxiety was reduced significantly among the group exposed to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. The study also revealed that Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Social Skills Training had a significant effect on aggression among the participants. Improvements in self-esteem were recorded among the participants exposed to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Social Skills Training. It was also revealed that gender did not have any significant effect on depression, anxiety, aggression and low self-esteem of the participants in the experimental groups. Discussions on the findings of the study were made. It was recommended that counsellors should be employed in all schools to provide necessary assistance to students especially those that are from single-parent homes to overcome psycho-social problems such as depression, aggression, anxiety and low self-esteem. | en_US |
