dc.description.abstractThe study evaluates the characteristics of surface water from time rural settlements in parts of Southwest Nigeria. One surface water used for domestic purposes were selected from each sentiment. In situ parameters such as electrical conductivity, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured while chloride, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, total dissolved solid, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, phosphates and nitrates were analysed using standard procedure. Water quality indices-National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Index (NSF-WQI) and Indian Water Quality Index (Indian WOI) were used to evaluate the status of the surface water suitability for domestic uses. The results showed that the computed NSF-WQI ranged between 37.15 and 49.57 which indicated bad water quality for domestic uses with Otaloke having the worst. On the contrary, the computed Indian WQI varied from 25.73 to 191.27 with Abule Sikiru, Arowosaye and Popo falling below permissible limit for domestic purposes. It is therefore recommended that domestic usage.en_US
