dc.description.abstractThis paper examines the phenomenon of poverty within the context of the Nigerian society. The prevalence, causes, effects and the ameliorative measures so far, of poverty were highlighted. Given that the social problem has remained endemic despite Nigeria being the largest economy in Africa and the 26th globally, the paper turned its thrust on the girl-child education as an antidote, which until now has failed to receive the needed attention. Concept of girl-child education within local and intcrnationul frontiers was addressed. The status of Nigeria's response to the provisions of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with respect t.o eradication of poverty and achievement of educational parity among the gender was duly assessed and highlighted. The paper observed that Nigeria is far from meeting the set 2015 target in achieving a poverty- free Nigeria. Sociological and counselling implications of the .situation were provided while the paper recommended among others that girl-child education should be given its rightful place in the nation through removing every foreseeable barrier to the girl-child educational access and retention, This will empower women and girls to contribute their quota in socio-economic development of Nigeria.en_US
