Abstract
Electroplating plants generate liquid wastes loaded with heavy metals. Effluents from four different electroplating plants were analysed and then treated using diatomaceous materials acting as ion exchangers. The materials tested were bentonite, limestone, hydrated lime, activated carbon, kaolin, diatomite clay and a mixture of diatomaceous materials herein referred to as "candle". Analysis of the treated effluents showed "candle" to give the highest efficiency for treatment (100%) followed in descending order of efficiency by hydrated lime, limestone and diatomite. Comparisons were made between the results of treatment of effluents with synthetic cation exchange resin and "candle" respectively. The efficiency of the treatment using "candle" was comparable to that using imported and relatively more expensive synthetic ion exchangers.
