dc.description.abstractThis study focused on the provision, utilization and maintenance of sports facilities in higher institutions of learning as predictors of sports participation and development among students. academic staff, non-academic staff and community residents in Lagos State. The variables studied were provision, utilization, pattern of use, accessibility and maintenance of sports facilities as it influences sports participation and development in higher institutions. The population studied comprised directors, lecturers, coaches, collegiate athletes, students and community residents. A sample of three hundred (300) respondents were selected and used through a simple random sampling technique for the study. A self developed research questionnaire designed and validated by experts in sports management was used to collect data. Responses from the questionnaire was subjected to descriptive statistics of pie chart while the five research questions were tested using the inferential statistics of Chi-square (X²) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that facility provision recorded X² Cal value (457.3; P> 0.05), utilization of facilities recorded X² Cal value (236.3; P> 0.05), accessibility to facilities recorded X² Cal value (212.5; P> 0.05), maintenance culture effect X² Cal value (60.24; P> 0.05), and pattern of use of facilities recorded X² Cal value (19.35; P> 0.05). Four hypothetical statements were significant. The study concluded that sports facilities provision, utilization and accessibility significantly influence sports participation and development in higher institutions of learning in Lagos State. Pattern of use had no significant influence on participation and development. The study recommended that provision of sports facilities must meet the demands of users and must be accessible for sports participation and development in higher institutions.en_US
