Abstract
This paper has examined some difficulties envisaged in the teaching of senior secondary school chemistry using information and Communication Technology (ICT). Two research questions were addressed with an instrument tagged; Identified Problem Inventory (IPI). A total sample of 50 chemistry teachers randomly chosen from five senior secondary schools in Education District VI (6) of Lagos State participated in the study. Data were analyzed using simple percentages and mean. Results have shown that about 57% of teachers lack adequate knowledge of ICT components, gender stereotype in the use of ICT exists highly in the secondary classrooms as indicated by 90.7% responses. 84% of respondents maintained that high cost of acquiring personal computers and accessories cannot inhibit effective use of ICT during classroom instruction, more than 57.9% are of the opinion that inadequate and unreliable telephone, network system deter effective use of ICT, 70.2% of teachers lack in-service training in the area of networking among others. The study has outlined some suggestions that would motivate chemistry teachers in the acquisition of adequate skills for programming instructions in C. D’s otherwise; the idea of application of ICT to chemistry teaching would be an effort in futility. The paper therefore has concluded that all chemistry teachers should make a paradigm shift in the use of conventional methods by embracing the potentials of ICT tools that make teaching child-centered and environmental friendly, if Nigeria wishes to catch up with the developing country like China for scientific and technological breakthrough.
