Abstract
This study is on improving competence needs of technical teachers in teaching basic electricity in technical colleges in Lagos State. The design adopted in this study was survey. The population for the study included aI/ the teachers teaching basic electricity in the six technical col/eges in Lagos state. The entire population • (30 respondents) was used for the study. A total number of twenty-four (24) questionnaire items were generated to elicit information from the respondents. Three research questions and a hypothesis were raised to guide the study. Mean and standard deviation were the statistical tools used for the analysis and the hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that the teachers have the knowledge of transfer of knowledge and ideas into practice, maintenance of electrical machines and equipments end identification of electrical materials and tools. Also, teachers do avoid using team teaching, discussion, modelling and storytelling in delivering their lessons. The study further showed that competence of teachers of basic electricity can be improved through: conferences, seminars, workshops, researches, mentoring/coaching, and creating professional development activities that coordinate with other professional development programmes. Also there is relationship between competencies possessed by basic electricity teacher and the teaching methods regularly used by the teachers. It was recommended that traditional methods of teaching can be incorporated into the new technologies of lnstruction=Teecnere of basic electricity should be regularly sent in-service training, workshops seminars, and conferences to update their knowledge. Teachers should be encouraged to be involved in research studies. Older senior teachers to mentor the young ones and creating professional development activities among teachers to be encouraged.
