Abstract
Festac canal is man-made and meant to receive Festac Town storm water but has
suddenly turned into a dumpsite for various domestic, agricultural and Industrial
sources. Borehole groundwaters close to Festac canal, one control borehole located at
500 meters from the canal and surface water samples from the canal at Festac Town
were sampled and analyzed for quality evaluation and pollution status. The results of the
physicochemical parameters showed temperature range 33.6oC – 35.8oC, pH 8.1 – 8.9,
Conductivity (UScm-1) 39.4 – 34700, TS (mg/l) 21 – 17038, Alkalinity 20 – 160, DO
(mg/l) 2.2 – 4.8, COD (mg/l), 5.0 – 42.0, BOD5
20 (mg/l) 2-250, oil and grease (mg/l) 0.02
– 0.1, Cl- (mg/l) 3.4 – 9200, PO4
2- (mg/l),2 – 31.25, NO3
2- (mg/l) 1.5 – 187.5, SO4
2- (mg/l)
1.0 – 25.0, Ca (mg/l) 4-560, Mg (mg/l) 2.0 – 2960.0, Zn (mg/l) 4.8 – 280, Cu (mg/l) or
0.04 – 3.40, Fe (mg/l) 4.8 – 280. The following parameters were not detected in borehole
samples but in the canal samples, Cd (mg/l) ranged between 0.24 – 0.46, Pb (mg/l) 0.09 –
0.12, Hg (mg/l) 0.05 – 0.09. Almost all the values obtained exceeded the WHO/FME
standard limit for drinking water. The bacteriological analysis on water samples
revealed total heterotrophic bacteria (cfu/ml) of range 1.45 – 4.20 x 108, total
heterotrophic fungi (cfu/ml) 3.0 – 19.0 x 103. Total coliform (cfu/ml), 1.18 – 7.0 x 104
were detected only in the canal samples. The bacteriological results confirmed intense
water pollution in the Canal as values obtained exceeded the zero permissible limit of
WHO/FME standards.
