dc.description.abstract | Waste management, including collection and transportation, is a global environmental issue that poses a very significant problem in the developing world. There is a considerable amount of illegal wastes being disposed without proper collection, sorting and transportation which has led to huge economic and environmental implications. This study examines the service quality of domestic solid wastes management and transportation in Ikotun-Igando Local Council Development Authority (LCDA) of Lagos state. Its scope covers all the communities made up of the Study Area, which include Abaranje, Egan, Ijegun, Ijagemo, Idowu Egba, Obadoore, Ikotun, Igando, IsheriOsun and Akesan. Three (3) structured survey instruments were developed to assess the service provision by cart pushers and PSP operators. Each was directed to the residents, one for the cart-pushers and the last Private Sector Participants (PSP) operators while the residents’ to assess the level of satisfaction to the operations of waste manager in the area. A total of three hundred (300) questionnaires were administered to the residents, forty-six (46) were administered to the cart pushers while forty (40) to the PSP operators. They were analyzed geo statistically for the specific objectives of the study. In particular, the results show that the PSP operators were found to be grossly ineffective in the discharge of their waste collection duties; which accounts to for continuous patronage of ‘illegal’ cart pushers by the residents. A number of factors were established to be responsible for the level of dissatisfaction ranging from the costs being charged for the waste evacuation to irregularity and poor timing of the operators’ activities. The conclusion identified that a synergy between the cart pushers and PSP operators will facilitate the desired goal of sustainable wastes management; and that integrated combination of the technical skills of the operators, while that familiarity with the neighbouhoods and terrains by the cart pushers will improve the waste management system not only for the Study Area but Lagos State at large. | en_US |
