Abstract
There are lots of problems that occur on construction sites, which require appropriate measures to checkmate
these incidences. This study investigates the various problems that exist on selected sites in Lagos State,
Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to find out the type of problem that occur on sites, their root causes,
effects, attempted measures to resolve them and the resultant outcomes. Purposive sampling technique was used
to select a sample of 27 sites in the research area. Data were collected through site observation, site discussion,
unstructured interview and site documents. The data elicited were tabulated and presented to achieve the
objectives of the study. It was revealed that 14 categories of problems exist on the sites investigated. The
categories are personnel, health and safety, method, interface, house-keeping, finance, ethics, external,
information, motivation, plant, site layout, material and site preparation. The measures that were used to curb
these problems were also shown, such as: employment of health and safety officer, provision of safety kit with
strict enforcement of usage and training on safety. It was concluded that, the sort of problems that can be
encountered on construction sites are traceable to these 14 categories; and the category from which a problem
occur suggests the solution that can be adopted for it. It is therefore recommended that site management should
be aware of these problems and take advantage of the identified measures to minimize their occurrence on
construction sites.
