Abstract
The fundamental change in modes of education has come about as a result of changes in modes of production, it
became more valuable to specialize and learn a particular trade, and such skills could only be learned from masters
of that trade. Apparently, on-the-job training was predominantly the system of mastering the arts or techniques of
job performance. Therefore, this study was designed to assess workplace learning skill and job performance of
craftsmen in construction industries, Lagos state. Descriptive survey design was adopted. Two research questions
and two hypotheses, tested at .05% level of significance, guided the study. The respondents for the study consisted of
310 master craftsmen, craftsmen and site engineers and their foreman in construction trades. Mean and standard
deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test statistics was employed to test null hypotheses.
The findings of the study among others revealed: workplace learning skill program do not provide the learner the
required skill of knowing the trade and lacked the why of the trade. It wm recommended that government should set
up a coordinating body that will moderate workplace learning activities in order to improve their performance.
