Abstract
Commonly used prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals are possibly present in environmental water samples at minute concentrations. In this research, a combined solid-phase extraction isolation and high-performance liquid chromatography (UV Detector) analytical procedure were employed for determination of the presence and concentration of human-health analgesic pharmaceuticals (Paracetamol, Diclofenac Sodium and Ibuprofen) in tap and well water samples collected from the well and tap of two hospitals in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. The calibration curves obtained were all linear with a correlation coefficient ranging from 0.9882-0.9999. The pharmaceuticals were all found in the water samples. The average concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are 0.242μg/L, 0.103μg/L and 3.402μg/L for Paracetamol, Diclofenac Sodium and Ibuprofen respectively. The presence of these drugs in water can constitute a significant environmental problem that should be addressed by the monitoring of these drugs and by implementation of methodologies that contribute to their decrease/elimination from water and waste water generally.
