Abstract
This research investigated the relative effectiveness of the rational Emotive and Client-Centred therapies in the treatment of test-anxious students. It also investigated the perception of students on the satisfaction and effectiveness of these modes of therapies as well as the expertness of the therapists under the two modes. The researcher used 240 students from 5 co-educational secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo state. These 240 students were made up of 20 males, 20 females high test-anxious and 20 males, 20 females low test-anxious students each grouped under (1) Rational Emotive Therapy (2) Client Centered and (3) Control Group. The pre and post treatment scores of the various group of students on the Test Anxiety Scale (TAS), Easy Task (ET) Difficult Task (DT), Total Task (TT), Hawkin's (Cef), Sorenson's (RQ) effectiveness and Sorenson's (RO) expertness questionnaires were compared. Means, standard deviations, 't'- test analysis, analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA) and Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) were used in analyzing the data. The level of significance was fixed at p<0.05. Results shows that the Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) is more effective than the Client-Centered Therapy in treating male and female, high-anxious student in most cases.
These findings have implications for counselling and academic performance as discussed in the main body of the thesis. Further research was considered necessary before any definite assertion and generalisation could be made about the effectiveness and superiority of Rational Emotive Therapy over the Client-centered one in treating test-anxious Nigerian secondary school students.
