The potential use of timber market waste saw dust and the processed bark of the teak tree (Tectona grandis) as potential low cost adsorbents for removal of heavy metals(Chromium, zinc, and Nickel) from three different electroplating plant effluents have been investigated. The effects of adsorbent loading, pH and contact lime on the removal of heavy metals from the electroplating effluents were also examined. The study revealed that sawdust and the processed tree bark were good adsorbents for the three heavy metals examined. The initial heavy metal concentration in the effluents of three companies (PRM, GAV & GRZ) were higher than the national effluent limits allowed by the Federal Ministry of Environment effluent limitation standards guidelines for discharge into water bodies. sawdust adsorbed 62.03% and 99.39% of zinc from PRM & GAV effluents respectively, while the processed tree bark adsorbed 78.53% and 95.83% respectively. 95.64% and 100% of Ni in the effluents of GRZ were fully adsorbed by saw dust and the tree bark respectively. The percentage adsorption of Chromium by sawdust was 7.27%, 65.40% and 100% from effluents of PRM, GAV and GRZ respectively while the bark adsorbed 16.88%, 61.92% and 84.76% from the effluentsof PRM, GAV and GRZ respectively. The study showed an increase in the amount of metal adsorbed as loading increased. The two adsorbents also satisfied the Freundich Adsorption Isotherm. The amount of metal adsorbed increased as the pH was increased for Zinc but decreased for Chromium and Nickel as the pH was increased. Variations in adsorption were also observed as the adsorbent contact lime was varied onen_US
