Abstract
Background
Endocrine diseases are ubiquitous. In our environment, Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Obesity and Thyroid disorders represent the most common examples. DM is a global health problem with a myriad of complications. One of which is the effect of DM on immune function. We sought to evaluate outcomes in those with common endocrine diseases who were infected with COVID-19.
Aims and objectives: To determine outcomes in terms of mortality in patients with common endocrine diseases who contracted COVID-19.
Methodology: The study design was an observational, descriptive, prospective study, with 120 participants from Endocrinology/DM clinic at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and Serenity Hospital Surulere (private medical clinic). Data collected include age, gender, Endocrine disease, and COVID status. Patients were followed up over a 3-month period for outcome in terms of mortality.
Results: Data of 120 subjects was analysed. There were 61 males and 59 females, with a male-female ratio of about 1:1. Mean age was 58, the highest age was 87yrs and the lowest age was 30yrs. The mode was 46 yrs. Over half [88 ] of patients had DM, 22 patients with Obesity, 17 with Thyroid disorders. The mortality rate of patients with Endocrine diseases who had COVID-19 was calculated at 11%, with about 85% of these deaths occurring in the elderly- above (>60). 92% patients of patients who died had Type 2 DM. Approximately 80% of patients who were infected with COVID-19 had at least 1 co-morbid disease.
Conclusion: Older age, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, presence of at least 1 comorbidity was associated with increased mortality in patients with Endocrine diseases who were infected with COVID-19 in our study.
