dc.description.abstract | Rapid urbanization has encouraged the growth of many cities into mega-cities around the world. But almost all the mega-cities in developing countries are experiencing negative environmental impacts due to inadequacies in the planning for their urban growth coupled with infrastructural deficiencies and decays. Lagos is a continuous and rapidly urbanized city located on the narrow coastal plain of the Bight of Benin in the Southwestern Nigeria. It is growing in agglomerations of other urban centers around the mainland, thereby, developing into a mega-city. It is against this backdrop that this study interrogates the urbanization tendency of the Lagos mega - city, the threats to the components of the environment, its susceptibility and vulnerability to climate change and climate variability. The study employs both descriptive and analytical methods to establish while Lagos is lagging behind on the issue of environmental security. At the end, the study suggests sustainable approaches to the environmental management in view of climate change in order to achieve water and environmental security in the Lagos mega - city. The knowledge gained from the study could assist policy makers in developing countries in their quest for safe and healthy urban cities. | en_US |
