Abstract
History of Education has become a critical element of the educational process for more reasons
than one. In Nigeria, for example, education is viewed as a veritable yeast that ferments effective
social, economic, political, cultural, and aesthetic development. Education is used to produce
citizens with the right skills and attitudes to move their nations forward. Certainly, most leaders
in Nigeria so far had acquired their leadership skills through the educational process, even
though many failed in their leadership positions.
Despite the significance attached to education, its planning, implementation and administration
have witnessed sporadic mal-administrative convulsions that have tended to vitiate the standards
of its very fulcrum on which our total development pivots (Denga, 2000). Patriotic educationists
cannot afford to remain complacent in the face of this derangement. Consequently, this material
"Historical Development of Education" was prepared, as a guide-post to achieving quality
knowledge of the history of education and its development in Nigeria. History, they say, is to a
people what memory is to the individual. A people with no knowledge of their past would suffer
from collective amnesia, groping blindly into the future without guide-post of precedence to
shape their course. Only a thorough awareness of their heritage allows them to make their private
and public decisions. This, therefore, implies that when we have thorough awareness of the
historical development of our education, we would be able to identify the problems and
challenges confronting our educational system and how to tackle them squarely to achieve
quality and bring about accelerated overall national growth and development.
