Abstract
Objectives: Specialist prosthodontist for the training of undergraduate dental students are in short supply in Nigeria. Performance in domains of learning among dental undergraduate students may serve as indicator of performance in domains of learning to the desire of specialisation in prosthetic dentistry , among final year Nigerian dental undergraduates .
Methods: Final year dental students(N= 168) in nine established dental schools in Nigerian universities were contacted to participate in an electronically administered mixed method questionnaire survey between February and May 2021. The questionnaire was designed to collect data related to self perceived abilities in domains of learning , challenges with the undergraduate Prosthodontic course and desire for postgraduate prosthodontic specialization. Responses were related with selected sociodemographic variables.
Results: Response rate for the survey was 76.8% Three quarter (75.2%) of respondents attended institutionswith full prosthodontists. Only 25.6%expressed a desire for postgraduate prosthodontic specialization. Scores in domains of learning were average: Cognitive- 67.9%; Affective - 65%; and Psychomotor 62%(IQR 58-73). Psychomotor scores correlated positively with cognitive (r=0.61, p=0.001), and affective domain (r=0.47, p=0.001)scores. Respondents that considered specializing in prosthetic dentistry recorded significantly higher scores (cognitive p=0.002, affective p=0.001 and psychomotor p=0.001). Absence of a full time prosthodontists did not affect performance scores. Respondents expressed concerns about teaching methodology and the absence of adequate infrastructure.
Conclusons: Performance in domains of learning prosthetic dentistry was predictive of future interest in specialization. Modified teaching methods may improve outcomes.
