Abstract
The paper examines the psychomotor skills required for enhancing employability skills of woodwork students in Lagos state technical colleges. Although government and private organization recognize the importance of skill acquisition by workers which is evident in establishment of technical colleges and skill acquisition program, a substantial number of students are deficient in learning demonstrated by physical skills such as dexterity, precision coordination and job-related skills. Due to this glaring gap, the study was designed to find out: influence of psychomotor skill in enhancing employability skill and roles employability skills play in improving woodwork student's competencies. A descriptive survey research design was employed. The population of the study consisted of One hundred and four (104) year three (JIJ) woodwork students in Lagos state own technical colleges. Structured questionnaire and observation were used as instrument to collect data from respondents. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test and ANOVA statistics were employed to test the null hypotheses. Analysis through the use of SPSS computer program was carried out on the responses of 96 respondents who returned the questionnaire. The findings of the study showed that psychomotor skills develop students' ability to use emerging technology tools and information systems; improve woodwork students' creativity thereby increasing output production and employability skills developed in student enhance competencies to use various machines, equipment and tools effectively. It was recommended that professionals, employers and educational institutions should spend a considerable amount of lime and efforts developing methods to enhance the acquisition of critical psychomotor skills.
