- ItemOpen AccessConceptual Framework for Management effectiveness of Professional Continuing Education programmes in Lagos State, Nigeria(AABRI, Jacksonville, Florida, USA, 2016) Aitokhuehi O.O.Education helps development. Consequent to the rapid changes in the different systems in the world, there has been an amplified burden for professionals to be properly trained or certified to possess the required knowledge and ability that will boost their competence on the job. The research involved the development and validation of a conceptual model for effective management of Professional Continuing Education (PCE) programmes on the assumption that maintenance of a conducive physical and psychological climate for learning, effective administration and organisation of these centres, providing for students’ academic welfare and the use of qualified resource persons would logically lead to the achievement of above average performance in professional examinations. Survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised all the learners, facilitators of accredited PCE centres and examiners of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos state, Nigeria. The findings from the study show that having the indicated management effectiveness profiles alone in place does not bring about the expected above-average performance by the majority of the learners in professional examinations. The study showed that in addition to the above-stated factors, there is a need for a continuous linkage between the professional bodies and Professional Continuing Education centres through continuous accreditation, monitoring and supervision of Professional Continuing Education centres and continuous training and development of Professional Continuing Education facilitators through the train the trainers’ workshops and seminars.
- ItemOpen AccessFacilitating in continuing education centre as a management function(Department of Lifelong and Continuing Education, University of Lagos, Akoka, 2018) Aitokhuehi O.O.This paper posits that facilitation in Continuing Education centres involves management function and requires acquiring management skills. It discussed teaching in Adult Education as facilitation due to the need to consider the adult experience during the learning process and the democratic nature of Adult Education. Some concepts were examined, which include management, Andragogy and Continuing Education. Furthermore, the paper discussed the facilitator as a manager, management style in facilitating, management, leadership and facilitating and the functions of the facilitator as a manager in Continuing Education centres. Explicitly, the facilitator has a management responsibility within the Continuing Education centres for each of the activities being carried out, and these include: creating and maintaining a delivery environment in which learning can effectively take place; selecting appropriate modes of instruction in accordance with a facilitating strategy; motivating and controlling the class; assessing learner performance and providing feedback to learners. The paper, therefore, recommended that it is imperative that the preparation of would-be facilitators in Continuing Education centres should include training in management and management skills.
- ItemOpen AccessQuality education for achieving sustainable development(Fafunwa Educational Foundation (FEF) in collaboration with The Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria, 2019) Aitokhuehi O.O.; Jegede, S.Eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were adopted in 2000 and were given a target date of 2015. They were adjudged by the United Nations as the best anti-poverty drive in times past, but in contradiction, as these achievements were being chronicled, the world seemed to be undergoing peculiar circumstances in different aspects of life. The paper examined the achievements of each of the goals. The indicators of all the MDGs were reported to have improved dramatically from the base year 2000 to 2015. Also, the paper examined the current 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are supposed to usher the world into enduring development by the year 2030. It is argued by the paper that, for SDGs to be achieved, education has a crucial role to play and that such education must be qualitative. That such education for sustainable development must be directed to the attainment of a peaceful co-existence, encourage the internalization of values, reduction of poverty to the barest minimum and, more importantly, be based on the principle of inclusiveness. In order to achieve all the objectives of the SDGs, there is a need to rebuild the dignity of the teacher and teaching profession. Moreover, appropriate policies that are derived from an exhaustive understanding of the challenges plaguing society and the educational sector need to be formulated. In conclusion, leadership in any educational system requires a great understanding of the important role bequeathed to them with the proper understanding that qualitative education does not come cheap.
