- ItemOpen AccessDecline and Overview of the Tang Dynasty(A Publication of Nagpur University, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, 2014-03-20) Banwo, A.The Tang dynasty remains one of the most important dynasties in China according to historians. The resultant effect was high corruption and a sharp decline of revenue. It was a period of high hierarchical administrative structures that were in effective in meeting the needs of the Empire. Nevertheless, important landmarks within this period were the rise of women to the political atmosphere, the reformations of the civil service administration system, the great stability witnessed in the early era of the dynasty and the invention of block printing. Furthermore, the Tang Legal Code remains a yet comprehensive legal system that strictly pays huge attention to punishment and retribution. Just like in many civilized societies, it is an endemic vice that has shaken the core fabrics of human civilization and governments are faced with the challenge of eradicating or containing it, as witnessed in China and Nigeria. This research work examines Chinese and Nigerian corruption growth patterns through content analysis. Data were sourced through homogenous purposive sampling method through books, newspapers and journals. Bribes, grafts, abuse of power, nepotism and favoritism were all key factors that were selected for the study due to their prevalence in the two selected countries. The Extractive Corruption Theory, the Prisoner's Dilemma Theory and the Rational Irrationality Theory serve as theoretical framework for this research work. Different factors such as the market economy, low incomes, poverty and the cultural-historical perspectives are identified as the root causes of corruption in both countries. The study suggests stricter regulations, promotion of ethical standards and an independent judiciary as institutional methods to get rid of corruption. It concludes that the reinforcementof anti-corruption agencies' power and the promotion of moral education are constructive ways to deal with corruption.
- ItemOpen AccessGender Stereotypes and Traditional Connotations: (A Comparative Analysis of Selected Chinese and Igbo Women)(A publication of the Faculty of Arts, Business and Science, University of the North, P.O. Box 3000 The Pas, Manitoba, Canada R9A 1K7, 2021-12-12) Banwo, A.Traditional societies often define the sexes according to their gender roles. Chinese behavior and attitudes are regulated by societal expectations that are based on sex or sexuality and promote the belief that women should be fostering, obliging, and well-mannered while men are thought audacious, belligerent, and tough. When these notions, enforced by society, are ignored, women are seen as rebels, outcasts, or perhaps untraditional. Considering gender stereotypes spread across the Chinese Han cultural group and the Igbo cultural group of Nigeria, this paper examines data obtained via typical case sampling and analyzed by content analysis. Three key elements were identified and examined during this research (stereotypes, discrimination, and inequality of sexes). This work concludes that people find it difficult to disengage from their traditional concepts and views. It recognizes that the society maintains belligerent prejudicial attitudes that are generational and create dogma and negative connotations regarding gender stereotypes. It suggests that gender stereotypes and traditional connotations that promote discrimination and the inequality of sexes be strongly or eradicated. It concludes that all human beings are equal and no form of discrimination or stereotype should exist in our societies.

- ItemRestrictedReducing recidivism rate: A comparative study of Nigeria and China‟s prison system(African Journal of Social Issues, A Publication of the Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law, Walter Sisulu University, Mthatha 5099, South Africa, 2021-12-01) Banwo, A.This study examined the two prison systems of two different countries, Nigeria and China with the aim of identifying the rates of recidivism among them. One of the goals of any criminal justice system is to rehabilitate criminals and turn them into responsible citizens that can be reintegrated into the society. A sound criminal justice system aims to end crime not the lives of the citizens that committed the crimes. Data for this research work were obtained through critical case sampling and content analysis was used to study this work. Certain factors such as prisoners, criminal justice system, recidivism and crimes were selected for this study. It adopted the Person in Environment perspective and the Systems Theory as its theoretical framework. It depicted that the environment has an impact on the behaviour of people and that there were certain systems that interact to influence the conduct of humans. This study observed that the Chinese government has implemented effective correctional programmes and policies for prisoners to get accepted in the society while the Nigerian government has failed to design and implement policies and programmes aimed at reducing the rate of recidivism. It argued that China takes care of the rights of prisoners while in Nigeria prisoners‟ rights are alienated with inappropriate prisons conditions. This study recommended that prisons should facilitate prisoners‟ employment and skills development which can assist them to deviate from their offensive acts. It concluded that improved prisoners‟ conditions through education, training, skill development, and restoration of rights are of great necessity for prisoners while undergoing rehabilitation.
