- ItemOpen AccessAdult Education and Employee Training in the Hotel Industry in Nigeria(Metropolitan University, EuroChrie, 2015) Bakare, T.V.The hotel industry could be more lucrative and economy-boosting, if properly handled. Unfortunately, it is yet to take its pride of place in Nigeria. As a service industry, personnel’s training is very important. The level of training in the hotel industry from the employees’ perspective as well as training gains form the main focus of this study. It is a survey of the level and effect of personnel training in hotels in Lagos. 340 employees and employers responded to questionnaire and interviews. Findings reveal that the level of training received by hotel employees is lower than the expected and training was viewed differently by hotel employees. Several factors affect a sustained level of training in the hotel industry. It was suggested that more international quality assurance processes be adopted to improve the industry and ensure uniformity in hotel employees training.

- ItemOpen AccessThe Adult Educator in Nigeria – Born or made?(Manchester, UK. Scholarlink Research Institute Journals, 2011) Bakare, T.V.The discourse looks into who an adult educator is and what is expected of him. Many people in the industry hardly recognize that they even fall into the category of an adult educator. Several studies also indicate that many are not fully aware of what is involved in being an adult educator. Majority did not believe that they needed extra training to handle adult learners. This erroneous belief has tremendous impact on the way adult education is practiced. Several recommendations were made and the necessity to train adult educators appropriately was re-emphasized.
- ItemOpen AccessEffect of Coping Strategies on the Balancing of Home and Work Responsibilities of the Working Mother in the Banking Sector(Faculty of Education, University of Lagos: Lagos Education Review, 2013-01) Bakare, T.V.Adult education is interested in any practice that helps to make the adult more effective in the dispensation of their basic duties. The study looked at coping methods of working mothers in the banking industry. It surveyed the opinion of 125 purposefully selected female bank workers who were also parents, and found that there were various factors militating against the delivery of their expected work and domestic roles. They have had to develop individual coping mechanisms, especially considering the ‘Lagos Factor’. The questionnaire, containing a bio-data section and the second part a cluster of items to be ranked according to their importance, was used to gather qualitative data and the descriptive statistics used to present the results of the ranking. The study documented popular coping mechanisms among working mothers who were bankers. It was suggested that bank employers need to also encourage working mothers with more incentives in order to make them more effective, and to help in maintaining the family structure. Family counseling, among others, was also suggested as a method of helping to equip the working mothers to develop effective coping strategies.
- ItemOpen AccessThe probability, Prospect and Efficacy of Heutagogy in Distance Learning for Lifelong and Continuing Education in Nigeria(Cameroon: University of Dschang. Academic Network Publishing, Netherlands & Researchers International Network, 2018-11-02) Bakare, T.V.There is a pressing need to use teaching/learning methods that fit the requirements of the noughties. This is autodidactic learning that is suited to the distance mode of learning and is meant to produce learners who will be self-directing and master the use of technology in a bid to fit better into the global learning community and be lifelong learners. The study was a survey to explore the efficacy of the use of Heutagogical principles in the University of Lagos Distance Learning Institute. 400 students were selected using multistage and stratified random sampling techniques, and a duly validated 21 item questionnaire with a reliability quotient of .86, using test retest method established the reliability; along with Key Informant Interview sessions with Lecturers and Administrative staff to corroborate, showed that Heutagogical principles were being observed, but only to a certain level. The hypothesis with a calculated 2 of 70.94, which is greater than the theoretical value of 5.99, given 2 degrees of freedom at 0.05 level of significance was rejected. This suggests that there was evidence of use of Heutagogical principles in the management of DLI students. However the extent of compliance was found to be generally low and it was suggested that more elements of Heutagogy can still be incorporated in the method of teaching/learning in the DLI.
- ItemOpen AccessUnsustainable Environment: Managing Waste in the University of Lagos(University of Lagos: Unilag Golden Jubilee Research Conference and Fair, 2012-11-06) Bakare, T.V.Management of waste is vital to environmental sustainability, which is a key goal of the MDG. This experimental research examined solid waster management in the university system and designed a bottle-shaped dust-bin to encourage sorting of waste into appropriate containers in order to ascertain the level of the university residential community’s adherence to the 3Rs (reuse, reduce, recycle). The experiment was accompanied by a sensitization campaign. The research raised four questions and used a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques to gather information from the residents of the staff living quarters of the university. A careful examination of measurement of the contents of the bins revealed that there was a 75% increase in the adherence rate after the campaign. The various challenges were also noted and it was emphasized that the university system must re-examine its role in leading-by-example, especially as the university celebrates its 50th anniversary. If we fail to respect the environment, we cannot do much in terms of sending the right message to the communities. It is hoped that if the idea of the bottle-shaped bin is patented, it can be useful in encouraging proper sorting of garbage as even illiterates will understand the concept of what the bottle stands for. The study finally proposes a model for environmental sustainability within the university environment and later in the society at large.
