- ItemOpen AccessThe Adult Educator in Nigeria – Born or made?(Manchester, UK. Scholarlink Research Institute Journals, 2011) Bakare, T.V.The discourse looks into who an adult educator is and what is expected of him. Many people in the industry hardly recognize that they even fall into the category of an adult educator. Several studies also indicate that many are not fully aware of what is involved in being an adult educator. Majority did not believe that they needed extra training to handle adult learners. This erroneous belief has tremendous impact on the way adult education is practiced. Several recommendations were made and the necessity to train adult educators appropriately was re-emphasized.
- ItemOpen AccessQuality Assurance: Perceptions of Continuous Assessment Practice at the Undergraduate Level of some Nigerian Universities. Quality Assurance Mechanism in Nigerian Education.(Nigerian Academy of Education, 2012) Ilogu, G.C; Oke, C.O; Alade, O.M; Bakare, T.VAssessment is an aspect of quality assurance in Education. Assessment is a burning issue in many countries including Nigeria. This is because its use for placement of students, diagnosis of learning problems and certification. The Nigerian government in the National Policy on Education stipulates that the main mode of assessment at every level of education should be by Continuous Assessment (CA) and this has since been complied with by every institution of learning in the country. Observations show that CA practice is open to series of abuses, hence it is being closely monitored at the Primary and Secondary schools’ levels of education but this cannot be said of the tertiary level of education. Undoubtedly, the need to closely monitor CA practice in tertiary institutions, particularly in universities, cannot be ignored because of the major function of certifying the specially trained personnel for the society in her various areas of need. Perception is a construct known to affect what a person sees, how it is seen and how the person reacts to situations and things generally. The study looked at the perceptions of CA practice at the undergraduate level in Nigerian universities. Four research questions guided the study while the sample comprised 92 lecturers and 921 undergraduates. Ten universities (Federal and State) in Nigeria were used for the study. The survey research design was adopted for this purpose. The instruments used for data collection were Undergraduates Questionnaire for Continuous Assessment Practice in the Universities, and Lecturers’ Questionnaire for Continuous Assessment Practice in the Universities. Data collected were analyze using descriptive statistics. The result, among others, indicated a trend of negative perceptions of CA practice by Lecturers and students alike but in varying degrees. The implications of the findings for quality assurance in education were highlighted.
- ItemOpen AccessAn Evaluation of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) for Health Care Providers in Lagos State(Research Journal in Organizational Psychology & Educational Studies (RJOPES), 2012) Bakare, T.V; Alade, O.M; Onwuama, M.The ability to develop the self is invaluable to the modern health practitioner in Nigeria, given their involvement with human lives. This is further necessitated by the advent of new diseases and innovative cures and technology use in the field of medicine. The study set out to describe the current status of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) practices of health professionals in Lagos State. The survey examined the adoption of CPE and ICT compliance. The stratified random sampling technique was used to select 190 respondents from across three different health care institutions both in the private and public sectors. The questionnaire tagged QHCP (r ∞ 71) was used to collect information, along with an observation schedule (guided by a six-item check list). Simple percentage was used and results were presented graphically. The relevant variables in the study include level of involvement of the regulatory bodies as well as the integration and adoption of Continuing Professional Education in the health care system in the nation. The results revealed that the adoption of post certification education is not handled with the deserved level of seriousness and also that the level of ICT compliance in the industry is rather low. The study therefore recommends the increased monitoring and regulating of CPE in the health industry along with ICT use. The implication for adult education, evaluation and the health industry is that CPE must be re-emphasized in a bid to encourage lifelong learning and continued self improvement/development in innovative ways worthy of a constantly changing world. It is definitely forward-looking to ensure that health practitioners constantly re-train to maintain a healthy State and Nation.
- ItemOpen AccessUnsustainable Environment: Managing Waste in the University of Lagos(University of Lagos: Unilag Golden Jubilee Research Conference and Fair, 2012-11-06) Bakare, T.V.Management of waste is vital to environmental sustainability, which is a key goal of the MDG. This experimental research examined solid waster management in the university system and designed a bottle-shaped dust-bin to encourage sorting of waste into appropriate containers in order to ascertain the level of the university residential community’s adherence to the 3Rs (reuse, reduce, recycle). The experiment was accompanied by a sensitization campaign. The research raised four questions and used a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques to gather information from the residents of the staff living quarters of the university. A careful examination of measurement of the contents of the bins revealed that there was a 75% increase in the adherence rate after the campaign. The various challenges were also noted and it was emphasized that the university system must re-examine its role in leading-by-example, especially as the university celebrates its 50th anniversary. If we fail to respect the environment, we cannot do much in terms of sending the right message to the communities. It is hoped that if the idea of the bottle-shaped bin is patented, it can be useful in encouraging proper sorting of garbage as even illiterates will understand the concept of what the bottle stands for. The study finally proposes a model for environmental sustainability within the university environment and later in the society at large.
- ItemOpen AccessEffect of Coping Strategies on the Balancing of Home and Work Responsibilities of the Working Mother in the Banking Sector(Faculty of Education, University of Lagos: Lagos Education Review, 2013-01) Bakare, T.V.Adult education is interested in any practice that helps to make the adult more effective in the dispensation of their basic duties. The study looked at coping methods of working mothers in the banking industry. It surveyed the opinion of 125 purposefully selected female bank workers who were also parents, and found that there were various factors militating against the delivery of their expected work and domestic roles. They have had to develop individual coping mechanisms, especially considering the ‘Lagos Factor’. The questionnaire, containing a bio-data section and the second part a cluster of items to be ranked according to their importance, was used to gather qualitative data and the descriptive statistics used to present the results of the ranking. The study documented popular coping mechanisms among working mothers who were bankers. It was suggested that bank employers need to also encourage working mothers with more incentives in order to make them more effective, and to help in maintaining the family structure. Family counseling, among others, was also suggested as a method of helping to equip the working mothers to develop effective coping strategies.

- ItemOpen AccessFramework for Implementing Corporate Social Responsibility in Private Organizations in Nigeria(University of Lagos: Department of Lifelong and continuing Education., 2017) Bakare, T.V; Ememe, P.I; Kolawole, O.TBusiness organisations are involved in activities they term “Corporate Social Responsibility”, most of the time, these activities are presented with so much noise and at the end does not really benefit the business organizations nor the communities at the receiving end. With these “Corporate Social Responsibility” activities focusing most times on building the business organisations name, reputation and goodwill, it gives little or no real benefit to the community. The real issues are to develop an appropriate strategy which can benefit both business organizations and the community simultaneously. - ItemOpen AccessThe probability, Prospect and Efficacy of Heutagogy in Distance Learning for Lifelong and Continuing Education in Nigeria(Cameroon: University of Dschang. Academic Network Publishing, Netherlands & Researchers International Network, 2018-11-02) Bakare, T.V.There is a pressing need to use teaching/learning methods that fit the requirements of the noughties. This is autodidactic learning that is suited to the distance mode of learning and is meant to produce learners who will be self-directing and master the use of technology in a bid to fit better into the global learning community and be lifelong learners. The study was a survey to explore the efficacy of the use of Heutagogical principles in the University of Lagos Distance Learning Institute. 400 students were selected using multistage and stratified random sampling techniques, and a duly validated 21 item questionnaire with a reliability quotient of .86, using test retest method established the reliability; along with Key Informant Interview sessions with Lecturers and Administrative staff to corroborate, showed that Heutagogical principles were being observed, but only to a certain level. The hypothesis with a calculated 2 of 70.94, which is greater than the theoretical value of 5.99, given 2 degrees of freedom at 0.05 level of significance was rejected. This suggests that there was evidence of use of Heutagogical principles in the management of DLI students. However the extent of compliance was found to be generally low and it was suggested that more elements of Heutagogy can still be incorporated in the method of teaching/learning in the DLI.
- ItemOpen AccessUse of e-learning as a teaching method to improve academic efficiency in the Distance Learning Institute, University of Lagos(Clute Institute, Colorado: Littleton, USA, 2020-08-04) T.V. BakareE-learning has come to stay as a 21st century phenomenon and has deeply impacted our daily lives in diverse ways, whether in economic, academic, socio-cultural or political spheres. This study, which is based on the theories of andragogy and heutagogy explored and documented the application of modern technology and e-learning facilities to improve academic efficiency in distance education in a specific distance learning Institute in Nigeria and came up with some observations. Students and Lecturers (n=250) participated in a survey that assessed the effectiveness of e-learning methods as a tool for improving academic quality and learner engagement. It was a participatory experimental research in the University of Lagos’ Distance Learning Institute (DLI) with students in four levels of study and across different courses and departments. Self-administered structured Opinionnaire and Interviews were used for data collection. The research was guided by seven research questions. The response trends quantitatively revealed that majority of the learners were still wary of e-learning as a teaching/learning method and have no choice but to use it. It was suggested that ways be found to expand the use of, and make e-learning more learner- friendly, with more time devoted to initiating learners into the use of modern technology and e-learning as a method. E-learning remains the best option for distance education, in spite of the attendant challenges and must be adopted for self development, global conformity and best practices.
