- ItemOpen AccessAvailability of Information Resources for Research Output: Perception of Academic Staff Members in Nigerian Federal Universities(International Journal of Computer Science and Telecommunications, 2013) Okiki, O.CThe volume of information resources potentially available in the globe is massive; hence it becomes necessary to examine available information resources for academics research activity in the academia. This study, therefore, examined the perception of academics on availability of information resources for research productivity in federal universities in Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The Multistage sampling technique was used to select 1,057 academic staff members from twelve federal universities in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. The categories of academic staff covered in the study were from professorial cadre to graduate assistant. The instruments used for data collection were: Availability of Information Resources (r= 0.69) and Research Productivity of Academics (r=0.91). Eight hundred and seventy-three copies of the questionnaire were used for analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. There was no significant relationship between availability of information resources and academics research productivity. The mean score of information resources availability was adequate in Nigerian federal universities libraries (=2.41; SD = 0.90) which means that information resources were readily available to academics for research productivity. To further sustain academic staff research productivity, librarians should organize continuous awareness program on availability of information resources to increase research productivity of academics
- ItemOpen AccessInformation Literacy Skills of Academic Staff in Nigerian Federal Universities(International Journal of Library Science - CESER PUBLICATIONS, 2013) Okiki, O.C; Mabawonku, I.MThe volume of information resources at the disposal of academic staff members is massive hence requisite information literacy skills to access the available information resources, evaluate and effectively use them is vital for research productivity. Several studies have examined academics’ institutional factors, demographic characteristics and information utilization skills. However, these studies have not adequately addressed information literacy skills of academics. This study, therefore, examined information literacy skills on in federal universities in Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. Multistage ampling technique was used to select one thousand one hundred and fifty-seven (1,057) academic staff members from federal universities in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. The instruments used for data collection were: Information Literacy Skills Acquisition Scale ( = 0.83), and Information Literacy Skills Scale ( = 0.92) Eight hundred and seventy-three (873) copies of questionnaire were completed, returned and used in the study which represent (83%) response rate. Two research questions and one hypothesis were answered and data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The mean score of overall research productivity of academic staff members was (X=3.51; SD = 2.64). The mean scores of information literacy skills (X= 2.06; SD = 0.38), an indication that information literacy skills of academics in Nigerian federal universities was high. To sustain academic staff information literacy skills constant training of academics on information literacy skills acquisition is hereby recommended.
- ItemOpen AccessResearch Productivity of Teaching Faculty Members in Nigerian Federal Universities: An Investigative Study(Chinese Librarianship: an International Electroni c Journal (2013), 2013) Okiki, O.CThis study assessed the level of research productivity of teaching faculty members in Nigerian federal universities. The findings of the study show that the research productivity of the teaching faculty members in Nigerian federal universities is high in journal publications, technical reports, conference papers, working papers, and occasional papers. The research productivity is higher in Northeast (M=22.53; SD=25.73), and Southwest (M=21.74; SD=87.28), and North Central (M=20.69; SD=31.24) Nigeria. Also, the mean score of information resources availability (M=2.41; SD=0.90) indicates that information resources are readily available to teaching faculty members in Nigerian federal universities. The barriers to research productivity by teaching faculty members in the universities include low Internet bandwidth (M=3.793; SD=1.162) and financial constraint (M=3.543; SD=1.257). Besides, the study has shown the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching faculty members in Nigerian universities in terms of their research output.
- ItemOpen AccessUsing Virtual Collaborations System to enhance Operational Performance of Academic Staff in University of Lagos(The Faculty of Education, the University of Lagos, Akoka., 2013-01) Adebayo, A; Adebayo, O.KThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of virtual collaboration systems at enhancing operational performance in University of Lagos. The study adopted a web-based survey using an online questionnaire that used a combination of closed-ended and open-ended questions. The population comprised all the academic staff of the university. The researcher validated the online survey by testing it with five members of the target population in a pilot survey that was carried out as part of the survey design. Feedback received from the pilot survey was used to correct unnoticed errors and ambiguities in survey. The results revealed operational performance problems in the university arising from inadequate information processing and appropriation support. Suggestions for solving the identified problems were proffered.
