Abstract
A large amount of a child’s time is spent in sitting in a school classroom. The classroom is where they will learn the various skills deemed necessary and proper for them to achieve success in the global society. If schools really do play a large role in teaching the next generation how to be successful members of the society then every precaution should be taken to make sure that the learning environment and facilities is one that helps teachers and students thrive.
It is on this note that this study examined the impact of learning facilities on teacher’s teaching effectiveness and academic performance of students in Lagos, Nigeria. Descriptive research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised of all senior secondary school teachers and students in Educational District II of Lagos State. Simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the sample size; the sample was made up of ten (10) Senior Secondary schools in Educational District II of Lagos State. Five (5) teachers and twenty (20) students were randomly selected to give a total of fifty (50) teachers and two hundred (200) students as the sample size. Three research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The instruments used for collecting data was questionnaire tagged ‘Learning Facilities and Teachers’ Teaching Effectiveness Observation Checklist (LFTTEOC) and English Language Achievement Test (ELAT). The data collected were analyzed using the simple percentages and the hypotheses were tested using Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient. Findings showed that, there was a significant impact of learning facilities on teachers’ teaching effectiveness. It was also discovered that there was a significant relationship between classrooms condition and students’ academic performance. From the findings of the study, it was recommended that state government should provide more learning facilities for schools to enhance teachers teaching effectiveness and academic performance of the students. Also, more classrooms should be built in secondary schools to ease the problems of overcrowded classrooms and poor sitting arrangements that presently makes teaching and learning difficult in public secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria.
