Abstract
Maintaining the security and confidentiality of students is critical in ensuring fair and equal testing opportunities for all students in order to foster their academic successes in life.. It is the responsibility of all testing organization and programs to reduce the influence of cheating behaviour, security problems on test scores on the important decisions those scores support. It is in line with these, that this study investigates the impact of test confidentiality and security on the academic performance of secondary school students’ in Education District VI of Lagos State. Descriptive survey research design was used, and stratified sampling methods for the collection of 320 responses (174 students and 146 teachers) selected from 12 public secondary schools across Educational District IV of Lagos State. Two instruments: English Language Achievement Test (ELAT) and a structured questionnaire titled “Impact of Test Confidentiality and Security on Academic Performance (ITCSAPQ) were used for data collection. Two hypotheses were tested to guide the study at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the study revealed that there was a significant impact of test confidentiality and test security on the academic performance of adolescents’ in Education District VI of Lagos State.; there but there was no significant difference between test security and test confidentiality on the academic performance of adolescents.. Based on the findings ,It was recommended amongst others that security of test items should be considered vital before and during test administration process to maintain the validity of a continuous testing system; examination bodies should tighten up the security of live question papers and copyright of previously used items in case of future usage due to item rotations; the present and subsequent Government in Nigeria through the various examination bodies should implements strict policies to regulate test security and confidentiality at all educational levels; school management should ensure effective implementations of policies on test security and confidentiality.
