Abstract
The main focus of this study was to determine the impact of elite athlete migration on growth and development of sports in Nigeria. Four research hypotheses were postulated and tested in the study. The research design that was adopted for the study was the descriptive research design. The population for the study consisted of sports federations, sports clubs, coaches and all club sports administrators, sports fans, sports media houses and athletes in Nigeria A total of three hundred (300) respondents were used as sample in the study through the stratified random sampling technique. The research instrument was a self-developed and validated questionnaire titled Athletes Migration and Sports Development Questionnaire (AMSDQ) with reliability coefficient of 0.87. The data collected and collated were presented using descriptive statistics of simple frequency count, percentage, bar and pie chart, while the hypotheses were tested with inferential statistics of Chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. The findings obtained showed that elite athlete movement had impact on sports talent identification and maximization, sports sponsorship and marketing, economic gains and quality of play of teams in Nigeria. Based on this, the study recommended that the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development should work together with all sports organisations in the country and come out with policies and initiatives to reduce the migration of elite athletes and players.
