Abstract
This paper provides a critical summary of the Vice-Chancellor’s address delivered during a convocation ceremony at the University of Lagos, highlighting the conferment of First Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates across four faculties: Arts, Engineering, Law, and the Social Sciences. The Vice-Chancellor outlines the academic contributions of these faculties, noting the professional orientation of Engineering, Law, and Social Sciences in national development through research and service. The Faculty of Arts is commended for its focus on liberal education and its transition to a new four-year curriculum aligned with Nigeria’s National Policy on Education, including the introduction of international languages such as Arabic, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.
The speech draws attention to structural challenges facing the university, especially inadequate facilities amidst increasing student and staff populations. Emphasis is placed on student housing, where limited capacity, coupled with the university’s original non-residential design, has led to pressures that are being managed through reallocation and expansion efforts. The administration highlights the importance of providing secure and affordable accommodation to ensure students' academic focus and protection from exploitative private landlords.
Equally, staff housing is recognized as a priority in sustaining staff welfare and retaining academic talent. The Vice-Chancellor acknowledges the rising costs of accommodation in Lagos and the need for institutional housing projects and public-private collaboration. Plans are underway to explore funding options and policy arrangements to enable more university staff to build or secure housing.
The address concludes by celebrating academic excellence, specifically recognizing Professor Adeboye Babalola of the Department of African Languages and Literature for receiving a prestigious National Merit Award. Overall, the speech reflects a forward-looking leadership committed to academic growth, infrastructural development, and national service.
