Abstract
This Research is on symbols and environments of justice in the works of Albert Camus and Franz Kafka, two literary icons who were largely preoccupied with denouncing the injustices that characterized the 20th century, and that continue to plague humanity. Not only that Camus and Kafka represent two ways of writing and two literary spaces, one of the major themes in their works is “justice”. The analysis of this term that is closely associated with the theme of injustice, presents the rule of justice in a world full of symbols. In order to bring more clarity on what Camus and Kafka conceive as justice, and to further illustrate the foundation and principles for the good practice of justice, the study seeks to explore and interpret signs and symbols of justice in The Just Assassins, The Fall, The Guest by Camus, The Trial, The Judgment ,The Penal Colony by Kafka. The study takes into consideration the socio-cultural, economic, political and physical environment of Man, an environment where the practice of justice has become a delusion, in spite of the establishment of legal and moral institutions. Through an analysis of their common ideology of Absurdity that reflects the irrational nature of the world, as well as values, the study demonstrates Camus and Kafka’s approaches of denouncing the injustices of fate. It also proposes a favorable milieu for the thriving of justice. The symbolic interpretation of justice in the texts reveals elements of Nature (the earth, the sun, etc...) as principal players for the rule of justice. This is why the authors’ pronouncements on justice are deeply significant.
Based on this, the study relies on Charles Sanders Peirce’s literary semiotics of object, signs (symbols) and interpretations (meanings), and on the ecocriticism of Cheryll Glofelty which studies nature in literary texts. In relation to this study, the diversities of creation are naturally called upon to collaborate for the triumph of justice. Consequently, there is need to practice this justice that is guided by an unwritten law, that silently regulates activities in the physical environment of Man, thereby influencing the symbiosis between Man and Nature. In other words, the careful and symbolic observation of human attitudes, the watch and attentive listening to the voice of Nature before, during and after the interpretations of certain court, human and environmental activities are of paramount importance. The study equally projects the strength of legal fiction and creates a platform for interdisciplinary research collaborations.
