Abstract
Lagos Lagoon is among the most polluted water bodies in sub-Saharan Africa. It is extensively polluted at the harbor by seepages from oil discharge terminals, spent lubricating oil from the adjoining drainage system, domestic and industrial effluents in the highly polluted Lagos metropolis, and occasional spillage from the Niger Delta where crude oil exploration is widely done. Analysis for the presence of 16 priority polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were carried out in water samples of the Lagos Lagoon. The determination and quantification of the PAHs were done by means of soxtec extractor followed by GC-FID. From the studies carried out on the water samples, chrysene 20.33ug/ml, anthracene 19.59ug/ml, benzo (a) anthracene 17.5ug/ml and pyrene 14.92ug/ml were detected in high concentration, while benzo (b) fluoranthene showed a low concentration of 0.88ug/ml.
