Abstract
Heavy metal accumulation in Clarias gariepinus, sediment and physico-chemical analysis of water samples were carried out at Igbenyi-adun part of Ogun River between November, 2012 to May, 2013. The hematological characteristics of Clarias gariepinus from the river were also analyzed for 3 months (March-May, 2013). The results of the physico- chemical parameters except turbidity and heavy metals investigated fell within Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) limits. In water, Cr, Pb and Cd concentrations were above the stipulated standards. Pb concentration ranged between 0.451mg/L at station 1 to 0.537mg/L in station 3. These levels were above the FEPA and WHO limits of 0.05mg/L and 0.1mg/L respectively. Chromium (Cr) also ranged from 0.181mg/L at station 2 to 0.201mg/L at station 1, compared with the 0.05mg/L of FEPA limits. The mean Cd concentration of 0.067mg/L in water samples from station 2 exceeded the maximum allowable limits of 0.01mg/L and 0.05mg/L of FEPA and WHO respectively. All heavy metals analyzed showed no statistical significance (P>0.05) between stations (sediment, water samples and fish muscles). The results of hematological characteristics investigated in Clarias gariepinus were Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC), 241.73±41.429 ; Total Leucocyte Count (TLC), 23.48±6.448 × 103cells/mm3; Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), 130.25±17.844) μm3; Packed Cell Volume (PCV), 26.343±3.001 μm3 and haemoglobin (Hb); 9.527±93.636) mg%. The parameters showed no significant difference (P>0.05) throughout the sampling periods. The values reported in this study can serve as baseline data to monitor future anthropogenic activities in the river.
