Abstract
BACKGROUND: Buccal fat pad (BFP) pedicled flap for the reconstruction of intra-oral defects has been extensively reported. However, the search of English literature did not show any previously reported use of BFP in lip reconstruction. PATIENT AND METHOD: A case of upper lip composite (mucosa and muscle) defect following excision of salivary pleomorphic adenoma successfully reconstructed with BFP pedicled flap and labial flap is presented. RESULT: Four week after reconstruction, full epithelization of the surgical site had taken place. No postoperative complication, no flap necrosis and no obliteration of the buccal vestibule were seen. Complete restoration of form and function of the lip was achieved. CONCLUSION: Buccal fat pad pedicled flap is a reliable option for the reconstruction of upper lip moderate-sized composite (mucosa and muscle) surgical defect.
