Abstract
Diabetes mellitus, especially non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) is being increasingly recognised particularly in Africa and other parts of the developing world. The complications taking a great toll of life among African diabetics include: hyperglycaemic emergencies, hypoglycaemia, limb gangrene, strokes and infections. Recent observations indicate an increase in these complications. If this trend is halted, the management of diabetes in the region needs to be reappraised.
