Abstract
This study examined the influence of parenting styles on adolescents’ self-esteem in Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State. Four research questions and four research hypotheses were asked and formulated respectively to serve as a guide in the conduct of the study. The descriptive survey research was used to conduct the study. Two hundred (200) participants from randomly selected four Secondary Schools were selected as sample (using random sampling) for this study from the population of all public Secondary Schools’ adolescents (male and female) in Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State. A total number of Two Hundred (200) questionnaires were distributed to the respondents (50, from each school- consisting of 25male and 25 female) and were retrieved for data analysis. The data obtained after the administration of the questionnaire were subsequently analysed using simple percentages, frequency distribution table; the formulated hypotheses were tested using Chi-square (X2) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that authoritative parenting style; authoritarian parenting style; permissive parenting style and neglectful parenting style have significant influence on adolescents’ self-esteem in the study area. Some recommendations were stated as the way forward and they are: Parents should give birth to children they can adequately cater for. The communication line between parents and adolescent children should be kept open and effective. Parents should encourage their children to believe in themselves and have high self-confidence. Parents should show interest in the activities that their children are interested in. There is need for personal/social, group counselling and individual counselling in schools where students with challenged homes are counselled. Students should develop positive self-concept in life to assist them in their academic achievement.
