Abstract
A considerable amount of literature has established that poor performance of construction projects is a worldwide challenge. However, studies on causes of poor performance especially, government-funded construction projects in developing countries are limited. Hence, the present study sets out to identify and examine significant factors associated with poor performance of government-funded construction projects in Nigeria using a cross-sectional survey approach. Questionnaire was used in collecting data from a large population (i.e. contractors, consultants and clients) using purposive sampling technique. The collected response was analysed using mean score and factor analysis. It was found that poor performance of government-funded construction projects can be grouped into four major causative factors: managerial and technical, corruption and attitudinal, financial and red tape, and poor procurement practice and economic factors. Furthermore, it was found that the clients, consultants and contractors unanimously agree that causes of poor performance of government-funded construction projects in Nigeria are hinged on technical and management challenges.
